Pugs have gone through a lot of physical changes, but temperament has stayed the same. They are thought to have originated in China to guard the royal family. Due to trade and wars, Pugs spread from the Imperial courts of China to the Royal courts of Europe. William, Prince of Orange was saved from an assassin by the timely warning of his Pug. Pugs were one of the first breeds to be recognized by the American Kennel Club. Pugs now have bred to be completely reliant on people in order to survive.
