Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi of Tibet developed the Shih Tzu breed we know today. After being threatened by the Empress’s successor, the breed spread to Europe and the United States during the middle of the twentieth century With its flat face and bulging eyes, the diminutive Shih Tzu is sometimes known as the “Lion Dog” or “Chrysanthemum Dog.” The dogs make excellent pets, having been bred for centuries to be loyal, fun, and friendly human companions. The popularity of the fun, friendly Shih Tzu breed is strong and will continue to grow in the coming years.
